Attorney Sergio E. Carvajal earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk Law School. Prior to establishing the law firm of Carvajal & Nielsen P.C., Attorney Carvajal held a Senior Staff Attorney position at Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts (LACCM). While at LACCM he successfully advocated for hundreds of tenants in summary process evictions from rooming houses, and public and private housing. Attorney Carvajal also was the primary litigator for the Fair Housing Project, investigating and representing tenants in affirmative housing discrimination matters. At LACCM, Attorney Carvajal was a proponent of community education, frequently spoke about tenants’ rights to fair and affordable housing, and was a contributing editor of Legal Tactics: Tenants’ Rights in Massachusetts, Sixth Edition. Attorney Carvajal continues to dedicate his practice to serving the community. His current focus includes landlord/tenant disputes, as well as discrimination in housing and employment. He also is certified to accept appointments through the Hampden County Bar Advocate Program and Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee. Attorney Carvajal speaks fluent Spanish. He is a member of the Volunteer Lawyers Service, the Hampden County Bar Association and the Worcester County Bar Association. |
Attorney Arose W. Nielsen is a native of Springfield, Massachusetts. She attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she earned her B.A. in Comparative Literature and Russian Language. She holds her law degree from Western New England School of Law. Attorney Nielsen has dedicated the majority of her legal career to advocating for the rights of the poor and indigent communities of Worcester and Hampden Counties. In 2004, she received the Equal Justice Legal Services Advocate of the Year Award as a staff attorney at the Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts, where she coordinated a homeless advocacy project and practiced primarily in the areas of housing, immigration and public benefits. In 2007, she received the YWCA Katherine Erskine Award in Business and Law for her work with immigrant victims of domestic violence. In private practice, Attorney Nielsen continues to serve the community with a focus on landlord/tenant and housing discrimination. Attorney Nielsen also accepts appointments to represent children and parents at the Hampden County Juvenile Court in Springfield, and accepts pro bono cases through the Volunteer Lawyers Service. Attorney Nielsen is a member of the Behavioral Health Network board of directors; the Hampden County Bar Association; and the Worcester County Bar Association. |
